The Central University of Jammu (CUJ) celebrated International Mother Earth Day 2016 at Campus, Rahya-Suchani (Bagla) Distt. Samba , Jammu. The function was presided over by the Registrar, Sh. Jit Singh. The theme for this year Earth Day was “Trees for the Earth”and Earth day 2016 coincided with the signing of Paris Convention which took place on 12 December 2015. The plants were planted which helps to reduce Indoor air pollutants the plantation drive was led by Registrar Sh. Jit Singh and Deputy Registrar Smt. Shafla Parihar. Sh. Jit Singh laid emphasis on important environmental issues such as ground water depletion and sustainable urbanization. This was followed by screening the documentaries on Water Crisis. Dr. Pankaj Mehta delivered the Key note Address on Kashmir Floods and Urban City Planning. The students along with Dr.Pankaj Mehta and Dr. Amit Kumar Faculty Department of Environmental Sciences interacted with the locals of Rahya-Suchani and distributed the Message pamphlets on Environmental Issues . The students of M.Sc (Environmental Sciences)also demonstrated the skit to give the message on to”Conserve Water” at Higher Secondary School Rahya. Sh. Khajoor Singh Sarpanch Rahya and Principal Smt. Rita Sharma also addressed the students on the occasion of International Mother Earth Day-2016 and laid emphasis on the Biodiversity conservation. The skit was also demonstrated at the Bagla campus by the students.

The Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ashok Aima of CUJ suggested that Environmental Protection measures can be best undertaken through practical demonstrations to the people in the field. He said that Character building was the most crucial factor in achieving ones goals including the protection of our environment. He urged the Department of Environmental Sciences of CUJ, to work on the Environment related problems of the Rahya-Suchani and come up with the tangible solutions.

In appreciation of the Skit Play, the VC, CUJ announced a cash prize of Rs.5,000 for the students. The function was attended by Prof. H.S. Sehgal Head, Department of Environmental Sciences, Prof. Lokesh Verma, Academic Coordinator, Sh. Jit Singh, Registrar and other senior officials of the University including faculty, Staff & Students were also present.
