CUJ holds seminar on Relevance of the Teachings of Swami Vivekananda in Contemporary Times.

The Swami Vivekananda Chair of Central University of Jammu organized a one day seminar on “Relevance of Swami Vivekananda in Contemporary Times” at it’s Temporary Academic Block (TAB) at Sainik Colony here today.

The seminar was formally inaugurated by Chief Guest Dr. Ashok Bhan Former Director General of Police J&K and D K Kapoor, former district & session Judge and Member state consumer commission was the guest of honour and Prof. Ashok Aima, Vice Chancellor of Central University of Jammu preside over the function.

Dr. Ashok Bhan in his address said that he was delighted to be amidst eminent scholars on life and philosophy of Swami Vivekananda coming from different parts of the country and teaching fraternity and students of the Central University of Jammu. “Teachings of Swami Vivekananda, one of our best known ambassadors, will always be relevant for his purity of thought, compassion for the needy and message of harmony and peace”, he said.

D K Kapoor in his address said that religious divide is so prominent that our country desperately needs to follow doctrine of religion propounded by the Great Swami more than a century ago. “Today we boast of being more educated, more modern and better equipped with science and technology but are we better citizens too? The answer is perhaps simpler than it ought to be and obviously it is in the negative”, he added.


Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Ashok Aima, VC Central University of Jammu, said that classroom teaching is not mere enough, societal building, exercise and raise of power of discourse is required for enlightenment. “Conflict can never create peace, unity of religion has relevance to contemporary society”, he added.

Earlier, Prof. S.K.Sharma, Professor Swami Vivekananda Chair of Central University of Jammu welcomed the august gathering and apprised about the essence of the seminar. The seminar was formally inaugurated by lightening the ceremonial lamp & floral tributes to Swami Vivekananda Ji by the dignitaries. Prof. Lokesh Verma, Academic Coordinator of CUJ presented formal vote of thanks in the inaugural session.

In the first session that was based on theme “Swami Vivekananda: The Archetypal Protagonist of Spiritual Renaissance”. Swami Ekarthananda, Shri Ramakrishna Mission, Jammu, Prof. Ramanuj Devnathan, Principal, Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan, Deemed University, Dr. C.M.Raina, Senior Assistant Professor, Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan, Deemed University and Prof. Arvind Jasrotia, Head & Dean Faculty of Law, University of Jammu threw lights on the life of Swami Vikekananda.

Meanwhile, in the second session, theme “Swami Vivekananda’s views on Society, Culture & Civilization” in session Prof. K B Razdan, former Head Department of English, University of Jammu, R.C.Kotwal, KPS, SP Headquarters, Jammu and Naveen Chopra, former Assistant Secretary & founder Member Shri Ramakrishna Mission, Jammu threw lights relevance of Vivekananda’s teaching.

The third session “Ethics in the teachings of Swami Vivekananda & Contemporary Issues” was addressed by Prof. K.L.Bhatia, Former Professor of Eminence, National Law University, Jodhpur, K B. Jandial, IAS (Retd.) Former Members J&K Public Service Commission and D.C. Raina, Senior Advocate and Former Advocate General.

The proceeding of the seminar were conducted by Dr. Samantha Vaishnavi, Assistant Professor. The seminar was attended by Heads of all departments, Faculty, staff and students of Central University of Jammu.
