Introduction:

 

  • Three days workshop on “Introduction to LATEX” has been organized by the Department of Mathematics, Central University of Jammu from 25th to 27th February, 2022. The workshop was held through virtual mode. There were registrations from different states of India.
  • The specific objectives of the workshop were the following:
  • To give beginners with a thorough theoretical and practical understanding of LATEX.
  • To familiarize the participants who already use LATEX with advanced tricks and shortcuts to minimize the time constraint.

Proceedings of Workshop:

  • The total 129 number of registrations were made for the participation in this workshop. The participants were of various categories as faculty members, research scholars and students from different institutes all over India.
  1. Day-1 (25th February, 2022)
  • Inaugural Session:
  • The workshop was inaugurated with a welcome note delivered by Dr. Kamlesh Kumar. He introduced the central university of Jammu to the participants and said the University came in to on 8th August 2011 with the appointment of first Vice chancellor of University. He said we the faculties of the Department are currently working under the guidance of honorable Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sanjeev Kumar Jain. He introduced the currently running the number of departments, research centers offering various programmes (as PG, Integrated PG and Ph.D.) in the University. He told the actual situation of the University He informed the participants that the Department of Mathematics (CUJ) is offering M.Sc. in Mathematics with the intake of 55 students. Apart from PG Course, the Department of Mathematics has produced 09 Ph.D. degrees and 10 M.Phil. Degrees till date. After that, he requested Dr. Ajay Kumar Sharma, the Head, and Department of Mathematics (CUJ) to share few words with the participants.
  • He also introduced to the speaker of first session, Dr. Harish Garg who is working as an Associate Professor in the School of Mathematics, Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, Patiala, Punjab, India. He is expert in many research areas such as Computational Intelligence, Reliability Analysis, Decision Making, Evolution Algorithm, Expert System and many more. He has published 330-research papers in which more 282-SCI publications in various reputed International Journals. He is the recipient of the Top-cited paper by India-based Author (2015-2019) by Elsevier Publisher. Also, Dr. Harish Garg is the Editor in chief in many International Journals as Journal of Computer and Cognitive Engineering, Annals of Optimization Theory and Practice. He is also an Associate Editor in many International Journals as Soft Computing, Journal of Intelligent and Fuzzy Systems. Finally, he requested to Dr. Harish Garg to come and start his lecture to enlighten the participants.
  • Session-I:
  • Harish Garg was the speaker for the session-I.
  • He taught about:
  • Benefits of using LATEX for typing our research related and other documents.
  • Basic idea about LATEX like different Tex Editors and Tex Systems available.
  • Installation of all Tex Editors and different packages.
  • Writing simple article using LATEX.
  • Writing different mathematical symbols and equations using LATEX.

He answered various questions and queries of the participants during the lecture as well as after the lecture. Session-I was concluded with a thanks giving note address to Dr. Harish Garg by Dr. Kamlesh Kumar.

  • Session-II:
  • Session-II commenced with introduction by Parmeet Kaur Chahal (Research Scholar) to our eminent speaker Dr. Puneet Rana for this session.
  • Puneet Rana explained about:
  • Writing mathematical equations using LATEX.
  • Various environments we can use to write different type of mathematical equations.
  • Inserting pictures in the document using LATEX.
  • Some useful published books on LATEX.

He answered various questions and queries of the participants during the lecture as well as after the lecture. Session-II culminated with a thanks giving note address to Dr. Puneet Rana by Vishal Sharma (Research Scholar).

  1. Day-2 (26th February, 2022)
  • Session-I:
  • Session-II started with welcome note to all the participants and the speaker Dr. Harish Garg by Dr. Kamlesh Kumar.
  • In this session Dr. Harish Garg gave some ideas about:
  • Creating tables in latex.
  • Different modifications we can make in tables using latex like- rotation, filling color, creating multiple rows and columns and many more.
  • Using TikZ in LATEX document for drawing flowcharts, Markov chains and block diagrams.

 

He answered various questions and queries of the participants during the lecture as well as after the lecture.

 

  • Session-II:
  • Session-II commenced with Dr. Kamlesh Kumar bidding welcome to Dr Puneet Rana, speaker of this session.
  • During this session Dr. Puneet Rana trained the participants about:
  • Creating presentation with Beamer.
  • Making slides using different templates.
  • Adding references in presentation using beamer.
  • Different LATEX classes and packages.

He answered various questions and queries of the participants during the lecture as well as after the lecture.

  1. Day-3 (27th February, 2022)
  • Session-I
  • Session-I started with welcome note for speaker of the session, Dr. Harish Garg by Dr. Kamlesh Kumar.
  • Throughout this session Dr. Harish Garg taught about:
  • Writing thesis and research papers using LATEX.
  • Formatting the research article in accordance with the requirements of different Journals.
  • Adding author name, address and designation in article.
  • Creating title page of the article using different templates.

He answered various questions and queries of the participants during the lecture as well as after the lecture.

  • Session-II
  • Session- II started with welcome address by Dr. Kamlesh Kumar for eminent speaker for this session Dr. Puneet Rana.
  • In this session Dr. Puneet Rana up skilled the participants about:
  • Bibliography management in LATEX.

As, it was last session of the workshop; therefore both the eminent speakers joined this session together and answered all the queries of the participants. After that, the Dr. Kamlesh Kumar (organizing secretary) gave a vote of thanks for the workshop. Firstly, he thanked to the honorable Vice chancellor, Professor Sanjeev Kumar Jain to provide this opportunity to organize this workshop. He thanked to all the faculties, research scholars and students of the Department of Mathematics, Central University of Jammu. He also thanked to all the participants who registered and actively participated in the workshop from various Institutions or Universities of country. He also thanked to the speakers for delivering such wonderful and useful lectures in the workshop.  

 

Conclusion:

 

The eminent speakers of this workshop, Dr. Harish Garg, Associate Professor, School of Mathematics, Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, Patiala, Punjab, India and Dr. Puneet Rana, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics, Wenzhou-Kean University, China enlightened the participants with their knowledge on the typesetting software LATEX. This workshop showed knowledge, skill and aptitude about the LATEX to many faculties, research scholars and students of Central University of Jammu as well as other university scholars who registered themselves for attending the workshop. Thus, the purpose of this workshop on “Introduction to LATEX” was completed.
