The Department of Physics and Astronomical Sciences, CU Jammu was established in the year 2016 with the introduction of a five-year Integrated Masters in Science (Physics) program with a sanctioned strength of 30 students. A panel of national experts framed the initial structure of the Int. M.Sc. Program. The aim of the program was on the emphasis to strengthen core-competence in Physics, while allowing the students to gain exposure to various other fields from sciences and humanities, thus giving a meaning to the integrated Masters title of the program. The Ph.D. program in Physics has been started from 2018. The research interests of the faculty members cover a broad range of topics: Condensed Matter Physics, Lasers and Photonics, Nuclear Theoretical Physics, Statistical Physics, and Material Science.
The Department has a team of highly qualified and experienced faculty members with varied fields of research areas. The department of Physics and Astronomical Science makes an ongoing effort to establish and maintain a learning environment that supports the best possible levels of both teaching and research. The Department is equally active in research with many quality publications each year in APS, AIP, Science Direct, Nature, Springer, Wiley etc. The objective is to create human resources who have a solid understanding about the aspects of theoretical, systematic, and application components of Physics. Different scholarships/fellowships are also available for the deserving students of the Central University of Jammu.
The Department of Physics and Astronomical Science has successfully organized many national and international scientific events, conferences, workshops annually on varied themes related to various branches of physics.
The department eventually aims to establish itself as a Centre of excellence for learning and creating knowledge through teaching and research from the physics & astronomical sciences perspective by expanding collaborations and promoting awareness to ultimately serve humanity in a sustainable manner.
