About Us

The Department of Mass Communication and New Media, Central University of Jammu, was established in 2014 with the vision of nurturing socially responsible, professionally competent, and technologically adept media practitioners. The Department is committed to preparing students to understand the evolving media landscape and to use communication as a meaningful instrument for knowledge, public engagement, social development, and democratic participation.

Recognising media as an important pillar of a democratic society, the Department of Mass Communication and New Media (MCNM) places strong emphasis on freedom of expression, accuracy, fairness, ethical journalism, and social responsibility. Its academic philosophy seeks to develop professionals who are not only equipped with contemporary media skills but are also sensitive to diverse perspectives and the responsibilities associated with the practice of journalism and communication.

The Department views journalists and media professionals as both chroniclers of society and catalysts for constructive change. Accordingly, students are encouraged to engage critically with issues of public importance, develop independent perspectives, communicate ideas effectively, and contribute meaningfully to society. The curriculum and academic environment foster curiosity, creativity, critical thinking, research aptitude, and a commitment to professional integrity.

The Department follows an experiential and industry-oriented teaching-learning approach that combines classroom instruction with practical training, creative exploration, and professional exposure. Students benefit from interactive classroom teaching and discussions, expert lectures and sessions by media professionals and subject specialists, workshops, and hands-on training. The academic programme provides practical exposure to photography and visual storytelling, camera handling and production techniques, video production and editing, digital journalism, online content creation, social media communication, influencer marketing, advertising and creative communication, documentary filmmaking, blog and feature writing and research paper writing. Students are also encouraged to undertake independent and collaborative media projects, enabling them to apply their theoretical knowledge to real-world media practices and develop the professional skills required for the rapidly evolving media industry.

Students are also encouraged to write for mainstream and vernacular media platforms, enabling them to gain practical experience in reporting, writing, editing, and public communication.

The Department currently offers the following programmes:

  1. B.A. Journalism and Mass Communication
  2. M.A. Mass Communication and New Media
  3. Ph.D. Mass Communication and New Media

These programmes provide students with opportunities to develop both theoretical understanding and practical competencies across journalism, broadcasting, digital media, advertising, public relations, film and television production, research, and emerging communication technologies.

The Department provides students with modern facilities and practical exposure aligned with the requirements of the contemporary media industry. A key facility is the Community Radio Station Tawi Dhara 91.2 MHz, a fully functional community radio station that provides students with hands-on experience in radio production, programme planning, scripting, recording, editing, presentation, broadcasting, and community-oriented communication. The Department’s practical learning environment enables students to translate classroom knowledge into professional skills and gain experience in the production and dissemination of media content across traditional and digital platforms.

The Department strives to create an academic environment where excellence is guided by responsibility and professional competence is complemented by empathy and social sensitivity. It seeks to empower students to move beyond conventional career pathways and engage with ideas, issues, and causes that contribute to a more informed and inclusive society.

Through its multidisciplinary academic approach, practical orientation, and emphasis on emerging media technologies, the Department aims to prepare graduates to confidently navigate the rapidly changing media ecosystem and contribute creatively and responsibly to the communication needs of society.

The Department of Mass Communication and New Media takes pride in nurturing ambition, creativity, critical inquiry, professional ethics, and a spirit of positive social contribution, preparing students to become capable media professionals, researchers, communicators, and responsible citizens.
